More Celebration Coming to City of Grand Rapids’ Annual Fourth of July Festivities

Celebration on the Grand and Amway Family Fireworks will now occur on first Friday and Saturday of July

GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan – In a move to create a patriotic powerhouse of entertainment, the City of Grand Rapids today announced that Celebration on the Grand and the Fourth of July fireworks will be combined into a two-day event to be held annually on the first Friday and Saturday of July.

As a result of the shift, this year’s Celebration on the Grand activities will be held the evening of Friday, July 4; and the Amway Family Fireworks event will be cap off the event shortly after dusk on Saturday, July 5.

Each day’s full agenda is still being confirmed, but it’s expected that many of the activities will remain the same as in year’s past; the most notable change will be the absence of a Celebration on the Grand fireworks display. Admission will also remain free to the public.

The move, which is welcomed by both event organizers, is part of the city’s attempt to create a new sustainable model for special events in Grand Rapids.

“Creating a sustainable platform for patriotic events is the first step of the city’s new approach,” explained Grand Rapids City Manager Greg Sundstrom. “This partnership exemplifies the collaborative investment model we are developing to help create a solid financial platform for all special events.”

As part of this process, for the first time ever, the City is adding the Fourth of July Fireworks celebration under the Sponsored Patriotic Events category--joining Veterans’ Day and Memorial Day. For patriotic events, the City will commit to a higher level of investment by waiving fees and charges associated with City services.

“The City’s partnership with Celebration on the Grand, Amway, Townsquare Media Grand Rapids and other partners will ensure the Fourth of July fireworks and Celebration on the Grand events are sustainable,” said Sundstrom.

“Celebration on the Grand is pleased to be part of this new patriotic weekend,” said 2014 Celebration on the Grand Co-Chair Sarah Noble. “Our event will continue providing free entertainment on Friday to celebrate the City of Grand Rapids.”

The same goes for the Fourth of July fireworks, which have been sponsored by Amway for the past three years.

The Amway Family Fireworks event will have family activities in the early afternoon and concerts and entertainment in the evening followed by the Amway Family Fireworks at dusk. Townsquare Media Grand Rapids is again the media sponsor and producer of the entertainment.

“Amway is once again proud to sponsor Family Fireworks in celebration of our nation’s independence,” said David Madiol, Amway’s West Michigan community relations manager. “Aligning closer to Celebration on the Grand is very fitting for Amway, as we were intimately involved in the original Celebration event."

The inaugural fireworks event in 1980 celebrated the opening of the Amway Grand Plaza hotel along with the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum.

Townsquare Media Grand Rapids owns and operates 97.9 WGRD; Channel 95.7, WLHT; 100.5 The River, WTRV; Classic Hits 98.7 WFGR; and 1410 AM The Touch, WNWZ. In addition, it also operates Seize the Deal Grand Rapids; the Grand Rapids office of Townsquare Interactive; and other live events besides Amway Family Fireworks, including Summer Craft Beer Festival on July 19 at John Ball Park in Grand Rapids.
